Blew out a cabinet door hinge mortise in a $6k cherry kitchen and had to fix it on site
Was installing uppers in a cherry kitchen in Naperville last month and my hinge bit wandered on the third door, tearing out a chunk of the stile right where the homeowner could see it. I stood there for a second staring at this gouge the size of a quarter, then grabbed a scrap of matching cherry from the cutoffs pile and started whittling a plug with my block plane. Glued it in, let it set for maybe 20 minutes while I worked on the lowers, then sanded it flush and touched it up with a little of the stain the finisher left behind. Homeowner never noticed, but I told the shop foreman anyway because that could've been way worse if I'd been working with a cheaper wood. Has anyone else had a Forstner or hinge bit wander like that, and do you pre-drill every mortise now or just slow down the plunge?
