My 3-year-old Festool domino cutter just started making a grinding noise mid-mortise on a walnut face frame.

It happened right after lunch today and I had to finish the set by hand with a chisel, so has anyone else had this and know if it's a simple bearing fix or a sign to just replace it?

My old shop teacher always said the first sign of a bearing failure is that specific walnut dust paste you get from face frames. Troykim is right about the cost question, but I'd check the cutter head for a tiny chip before ordering any parts. A single hard knot can knock something out of alignment and make a good bearing sound ruined.

Festool stuff is built like a tank but even the best tools hit a wall. That grinding noise is usually a bearing going out, which is a pretty common wear point after a few years of hard use. It's a fixable problem if you're handy, but sometimes the repair cost makes you question just buying new.
