Why does nobody talk about the 'three finger rule' for drawer fronts?
I was listening to an old guy talk at the lumber yard in Spokane last week. He said, 'If you can't fit three fingers between the drawer and the cabinet after it's installed, you built it wrong.' I went home and checked my last project, a kitchen island, and sure enough, my spacing was too tight. It made the drawers feel sticky and look crowded. Has anyone else heard this trick or do you use a different method for spacing?

Oh man, that rule is about more than just looks. It's about the wood itself. Wood moves with the seasons, swells up with humidity. If you don't leave enough gap, it's gonna bind. That tight feeling you got? That's the wood fighting itself. Three fingers forces you to plan for that change. Saves you from a stuck drawer next summer.
