Young guy at the lumberyard said something about dovetails that stuck with me all week
He told me he only cuts them by hand because machine joints don't have a story, and it hit different because I've been cranking out half-blind dovetails on the router table for 10 years without once thinking about what that says to the person who opens the drawer.

Did he say what kind of story a machine joint tells?

My old shop teacher had a sign that said "The machine does the work, the hand tells the story." He was a big guy who smelled like sawdust and coffee. Never did figure out if he meant it as a compliment to hand work or a warning about getting too sentimental over wood.
