Finally gave in and tried a toner probe after 8 years of eyeing them
Always thought they were overpriced gimmicks until last Tuesday when I had to trace 14 lines in a messy apartment panel in Columbus and it took me 20 minutes instead of 2 hours. Has anyone else held out on a tool forever and then felt dumb for waiting?

I get why you're pumped about it, but I see it differently. I've had a toner probe for years and honestly, it's not the magic fix people make it out to be. Yeah, it found my lines faster, but I've also had it give me false readings on old wiring where the signal just bleeds through everything. Plus, the thing eats batteries like crazy and the clips feel flimsy for what you pay. You got lucky on that panel, but wait until you're in a ceiling with tangled cables and the probe keeps picking up the neighbor's feed. Sometimes I miss the old method, tracing by hand, because you actually understand the path instead of trusting a beeping box.
