Heard a new guy at the supply house say 'signal is signal, cable is cable' and it got me thinking. Is that a dangerous mindset or just keeping it simple?

It's a bit of an oversimplification, but dangerous seems like a strong word. For basic residential work, the difference often doesn't matter in practice. A lot of guys learn by doing and pick up the finer points over time. The real problem would be if someone applied that mindset to a complex control system or high-voltage application. For pulling wire to a new light switch, it's probably fine.

Oh man, that's a really good point... I used to be all "it's fine, whatever works" but you're right, it's about where you draw the line. Changes how I see it now.
