My buddy in Omaha argued that we should always run a separate conduit for fiber drops, even in residential, which got me thinking about future-proofing versus just getting the job done.
He said 'the next guy will thank you in 5 years when they need to upgrade,' and that hit different after I spent all Tuesday fishing a new line through a packed chase in a 90s split-level.

Your buddy's heart is in the right place, but a separate conduit for every single residential drop is overkill. The cost and labor just don't make sense for most houses. A better middle ground is to run a single, oversized smurf tube from the demarc to a central panel. That gives you a clear path for future pulls without the expense of multiple dedicated runs.

People forget about thermal buildup in those big single tubes. Cram a bunch of active cables in there, and you're cooking your own wires. Separate runs keep things cooler, which matters for long-term reliability.

Ever think separate runs were a waste? That split-level job changed my mind, now I see the point. What's the oldest house you've had to work in?
