That one run of coax in a 1920s house in Dayton ate 5 hours of my Tuesday
Went out to a job in Dayton last Tuesday, old house, plaster walls, and the homeowner wanted an outlet moved from one side of the living room to the other. Should've been a 90 minute job, maybe two hours with cleanup. Turned out there was a horizontal fire block buried in the wall at 40 inches that no stud finder picked up, and the only clear path was down through the basement and back up. I pulled 60 feet of RG6 through a crawlspace I could barely turn around in, then fought a drill bit through 100 year old oak sill plate for what felt like an hour. Finished at 4:30, almost 5 hours after I started, and the guy tipped me 20 bucks so I guess it worked out. Anybody else got a trick for finding fire blocking before you start cutting drywall, or do you just poke around and pray like I did?
