A retired press photographer changed how I see shutter oil
Met an old guy dropping off a Nikon F2 for a CLA last Tuesday, said he'd shot 40 years without ever cleaning the shutter mechanism. He told me most of my oil choices were wrong because I was using modern lubes on old mechanical timing. He watched me work on a jammed Copal and pointed out I was over-damping the slow speeds. I swapped to a lighter oil he recommended and the speeds are within a half stop now. Anyone else get advice that contradicts what your manuals say, but it just works?
