Debate: should we fix the shutter or just swap the whole lens barrel?

I spent 5 years in Atlanta always replacing the full lens barrel on stuck shutters, but last week a retired guy watched me tear down a 1965 Pentax and said 'you know that blade just needs a drop of oil,' and now I'm questioning if we're all overcomplicating this, so who else draws the line between quick repair and full rebuild?
