There's a tip I heard about using a magnetic tray for tiny parts. It helps contain everything so you don't end up searching the carpet for springs. Keeping the area off limits definitely seems like a smart move.

Tiny springs are the worst. I was building a model car once and a coil spring shot into the carpet. Had to order a whole new kit just for that part.
