Just learned how many parts are in a basic Leica M3 shutter assembly
I was cleaning an old repair manual from 1965 and it listed 87 separate pieces for just the curtain and speed mechanism. That's not even counting the body shell or rangefinder. Has anyone else run into a repair where the part count felt way higher than expected?

That 87 number is just for the core timing part, right? Spencer's watch comparison is spot on, because each of those tiny parts has a tolerance measured in thousandths of a millimeter. If one little pin is off by a hair, your 1/1000th shutter speed is completely wrong. It's not just building it, it's the fact a tech has to diagnose and fix it decades later. The patience needed for that kind of work blows my mind.

I read an article once that compared a Leica shutter to a Swiss watch movement. It makes sense when you see the part count. All those tiny springs and levers have to work perfectly for the speeds to be right. It's kind of amazing they ever got it together on a production line. No wonder a full service costs so much. The precision needed is just on another level.
