Ngl, I've seen a rise in folks bringing me cameras with lens fungus, saying they found them in attics.

Are people suddenly cleaning out their attics, or is there a nostalgia wave for old cameras? Lens fungus doesn't just appear; it needs consistent humidity to take hold. What's the common condition of these attics, like are they in particularly damp regions?

Actually, fungus doesn't need STEADY dampness, it can start from just one humid season or a leaky roof. Attics often get random moisture spikes from weather changes, not constant wetness. That sudden dampness is ENOUGH to ruin lenses over time.

What about older houses with poor attic ventilation? That can trap a single humid spell for weeks, like @abby_martin28 said. A hot summer with a few rainy days can cook up perfect fungus conditions in a sealed space. I've seen lenses from dry states with damage just from being in a cardboard box near a leaky AC duct. It's not about the whole room being wet, just that one spot where the camera sat.
