Question about the old timer in Denver who said never pull a lens apart without marking the helicoid first

I laughed at him. Figured I could just count threads and put it back the same way. Lost track somewhere past 20 turns on a 50mm, and that lens sat in a bag for 8 months because focusing was never right again. Found my sharpie marks from the last one I did it his way on and it lined up first try. So now I mark everything. What is your go to trick for keeping helicoid timing straight on the ones with no factory marks?
