That old repair manual I ignored from 1987 finally got me

Back in 2018 a retired tech named Hank told me to shim the winder mechanism with a 0.05mm feeler gauge on the Canon F-1s. I figured he was stuck in the old days and skipped it, went with my own tension readings. Three weeks later I had two bodies back with erratic frame spacing, and one customer in Columbus was about to send his to another shop. Re-read his notes and tried the shim, fixed every problem. Has anyone else had luck with those old service bulletins over modern methods?
