The $45 flex cable that turned my cla into a nightmare

Bought a generic flex cable for a Canon AE-1 off ebay to fix a shutter issue, figured I was saving $20 over the OEM part. Took three hours to install, then the meter went dead and it shorted the board, so now I'm hunting for a donor body. Anyone else get burned by non-genuine parts on older gear, or am I just unlucky?

Ngl I saw a repair forum thread last week where the same thing happened to a guy with a Minolta X-700, he said the aftermarket cable had the insulation in the wrong spots and it fried his light meter too. These old cameras run on such low voltage that even a slightly off ribbon can cause a short, which is why the OEM parts are priced how they are. Hope you can find a cheap donor body, but at this point the $20 savings probably cost you a whole weekend and another camera.
