What was the actual trick, just rubbing alcohol?

Oh man, that lighter fluid trick is gold but you gotta be real careful with it. I've had a few old cameras that were absolutely frozen up from dried grease. I use a tiny syringe to drop just a little bit of isopropyl alcohol right into the joint where the lever connects. Let it sit for like 10 minutes and then slowly work the lever back and forth. The gunk usually softens up enough to get things moving again without having to take the whole thing apart.

Oh yeah, and a tiny drop of lighter fluid works wonders too.
