Tried fixing a stuck shutter with a hairdryer and ended up smelling burnt for a week
I was in my garage at 2am with a Canon AE-1 that had been stuck for months, so I hit the shutter with a hair dryer on high for 10 minutes, and the whole thing just melted into a pile of plastic and spring parts, has anyone else ruined a camera with heat or am I the only idiot here?

Oh man, that's rough! I had a buddy who tried to dry out his Nikon after dropping it in a lake, and he threw it in the microwave for like 30 seconds thinking it would speed things up. The viewfinder actually sparked and the lens glass cracked from the heat. He said the whole thing smelled like burnt plastic for a month and the camera was totally dead. We still give him grief about it whenever we go shooting together. So no, you are definitely not the only person who has tried to use heat to fix a camera and made things way worse. Honestly, your story is way more relatable than you think, probably most of us have at least one dumb repair moment like that.
