A stranger at a campsite told me to hang my food bag differently

Back in May at a spot near Mt. Hood, a guy saw me tying my bear bag to a tree branch and said I was doing it wrong. He showed me the PCT method with a stick and a rock, and I haven't had a single critter problem since. Anybody else get advice from a random camper that actually worked?

Maybe it's just me but that method works fine until you get a smart raccoon with thumbs.

Got a buddy who tried the whole "bungee cord on the lid" trick for his garbage cans. Worked like a charm for like two months until one morning he walks out and sees the cord snapped clean in half, the lid popped off, and trash everywhere. He said there was even a half-eaten bag of chips sitting on his car hood like it was a trophy. Found the raccoon later that week just sitting on his fence watching him clean it up, not even scared lol. He ended up getting one of those locking bins with a handle you gotta squeeze, hasn't had an issue since.
