Always thought you needed a fire ring to cook over a campfire
I spent years hauling a cast iron grate and building rock rings at every site until a guy at Shenandoah last fall told me to just dig a shallow trench and lay green branches across it. Tried it that night with trout and it worked way better than my usual setup. Anyone else ditch the fancy gear and go primitive with your camp cooking?

Ngl I think people overthink camp cooking way too much. Last trip I just threw a whole sweet potato right in the coals and it came out perfect, no foil or anything.

@avery_walker30 you're out here living in 3024 while the rest of us are still stuck on "you need a special camp stove and a pan" nonsense. I swear the outdoor gear industry convinced us all we need a whole kitchen setup just to cook a hot dog. Meanwhile your sweet potato is sitting there caramelizing in its own skin like it's no big deal. Next time I'll just toss a potato in the fire and see if the whole foil thing is really a scam like you say. Do you poke holes in it or just send it in raw?
