DAE remember when a camp stove was just fire and a prayer?
I used to just build a fire ring out of whatever rocks were near and hope the wind didn't ruin dinner. Now I carry a small fuel canister stove on every trip and honestly the fire is for sitting around after, not cooking. The change came after a soggy night near Bend, Oregon when my eggs turned into charcoal in a rainstorm and I ate cold beans from the can. It sounds small but cooking on a stove takes like 8 minutes and I'm not kneeling in mud trying to keep a flame alive. I still bring the cast iron for bacon on calm mornings but that's a treat, not the plan. The funny part is I packed the stove for 2 trips without using it because I felt like I was cheating. Now I just want to eat warm food and get to sleep. Anyone else carry a backup stove and still go through the fire building ritual out of habit?
