Finally chose a hammock over a tent for my Smoky Mountains trip this weekend
I spent like 3 weeks going back and forth between my old tent and buying a hammock setup. Ended up going with a hammock because I wanted something lighter for hiking up to the campsite near Elkmont. First night was rough, I won't lie, took me an hour to get the straps right and not feel like a taco. But the second night I figured out the angle and slept better than I have in months. Has anyone else made the switch and just felt dumb for not doing it sooner?

I read somewhere that hammocks are actually better for your back because you sleep at a slight angle, not flat. That "feeling like a taco" part you mentioned is real though, I think most people hit that wall the first night. Once you get the hang of the 30 degree angle on the straps it changes everything. My buddy swears by his hammock for the Smokies specifically because the ground there can be pretty uneven and rocky. Good call on the lighter weight too, every pound counts on those uphill hikes.

Did your friend wake up with any critters crawling on them their first night out?
