Finally found a dry bag that survived my river trip

Went canoeing on the Current River last month and my old dry bag left my sleeping bag damp. I had to pick between a cheap roll-top sack and a proper welded seam one that cost $40 more. Went with the spendier option after watching a buddy's gear get soaked on the same stretch. Everything stayed bone dry through two rainstorms and a rocky portage. Anyone else shell out extra for gear that only proves its worth once?

Pause before you credit the welding for everything. That pricey bag likely has a roll-top closure too, and those are only dry if you fold it right, at least three rolls and then clip the buckles tight. I've seen folks spend big on a welded bag and still get water inside because they half-assed the fold or left the strap loose. The real test is seams, for sure, but operator error is the bigger killer than cheap material in my experience. Your buddy's soggy gear might've saved you cash, but a $20 dry bag done up proper can outlast a fancy one done sloppy.
