My buddy in Colorado told me to pack a cheap tarp for under my tent, said it was a waste of money.

Actually that's one piece of gear I never skip. A cheap tarp under the tent stops ground moisture from soaking through your floor, and it protects the tent bottom from sharp rocks or sticks. That extra layer can make a huge difference if you hit a surprise rainstorm overnight. Your buddy might call it a waste, but a dry sleeping bag is worth way more than a $10 tarp lol.

I just use a groundsheet that's cut to the exact tent footprint. A full tarp can catch rain and funnel it right under you, which is way worse than a little ground moisture.
