My uncle swore by cotton socks for hiking, I paid the price

He told me last summer that wool was 'overrated and sweaty' before our trip to Shenandoah. I listened and wore cotton crew socks on a 9 mile loop, and by mile 4 my feet felt like wet sponges in concrete. Two blisters the size of quarters and a ruined weekend later, I get why everyone in this group preaches synthetics. Anyone else get terrible advice from a relative and stick with it out of politeness?
