Old school map case trick still beats my phone in the rain
Was on the Olympic Peninsula last fall and the drizzle turned into a proper downpour by hour two. My phone screen kept glitching under the plastic case and I couldn't read the trail junction. I remembered my dad's trick from the 90s, rub a bar of beeswax over a paper map and it sheds water like a duck. Tried it on a cheap topo before heading out and it worked, zero soggy edges after 6 miles. Anyone else still carry paper maps for wet trips or am I just stuck in the past?

That beeswax trick is legit, my scout troop used candle stubs on our maps back in the day and they held up fine. What always got me was the compass though, we'd spend ten minutes at every junction arguing over which way north was while the map turned to mush in someone's hand. Paper still wins when the battery dies, that part never changes.
