Showerthought: People keep packing way too much for a simple overnight hike

Honestly, I saw a group on the Eagle Rock Loop last month and their packs were huge, like they were moving in. Carrying that much weight just makes the trip harder and less fun. What's the one thing you always leave behind to keep your pack light?

My buddy brought a full-size camp pillow on a one-nighter once. We teased him the whole time, it was just this giant fluffy thing strapped to his pack. He never made that mistake again.

Honestly that sounds like something I would do. I'm a total sucker for a good night's sleep even if it means looking silly. My first backpacking trip I brought this huge inflatable one that took forever to blow up.

Actually I think bringing the right gear is smart, not silly. If a pillow helps you sleep better you'll enjoy the trip more. I mean I'd rather be well rested and a little teased than tired and grumpy all day.
