That $8 compass from a gas station actually saved my group near Big Bend last fall

I was dead set against buying cheap gear but my brother grabbed it on a whim, and when our GPS died 3 miles from the trailhead that thing guided us right back. Has anyone else had a piece of budget equipment surprisingly come through in a tight spot?
