Backpacking food: cold soak ramen vs. my old Jetboil routine, which one actually saves weight?
For years I carried a Jetboil and 2 fuel canisters on 3 day trips, but now I just cold soak ramen in a peanut butter jar overnight and skip the stove completely. Am I crazy for thinking cold soak works just as well, or does hot food matter too much to give up?
Man, is this really worth all the hand wringing? Cold soaking saves you maybe a pound or two but you eat sad soggy noodles in the dark while your buddy is slurping hot soup. If hot food keeps you from bailing on day two, that Jetboil is worth every ounce.
