Finally grabbed the MSR PocketRocket over my old SOTO stove
I've been using a SOTO Amicus for like 5 years now. It's a solid little stove, good flame control, but it's a bit heavy and that regulator is finicky in the cold. Last month I swapped to the MSR PocketRocket 2 for a 4 day trip up near Flagstaff. The weight difference is noticeable, the PocketRocket is way smaller in my cook kit. First night out it was 35 degrees and I boiled water for freeze dried meals in about 3 minutes flat. No sputtering, no waiting. The only problem is the flame control isn't quite as good for simmering, but I mostly just boil water anyway. Has anyone else switched and ended up missing the SOTO features for actual cooking?

Did you ever try the little trick where you wrap some tin foil around the base of the pot to help with simmering? I did that on my PocketRocket when I first switched and it helped a bit but honestly I still miss the fine control on my old Primus for making actual meals. I switched from a Primus to the PocketRocket last year and I feel you on the weight thing, it's way nicer for packing. But I had a trip where I tried to actually cook some eggs and rice and it was a total mess, way too hot and burnt everything. Now I keep both stoves and pick based on what I'm eating, boil water trips get the MSR and actual cooking gets the Primus. It's a pain having two stoves but I couldn't pick just one.
