Hot take: my $12 tarp beat my buddy's $200 tent on a wet night in Pisgah
Went camping in Pisgah National Forest two weeks ago and my buddy's fancy four season tent leaked right at the seam over his head around 2am. I was under a plain old $12 hardware store tarp strung between two trees and stayed bone dry all night. He spent the rest of the trip sulking and stuffing a towel against the wall of his tent. Here is the thing, gear reviews online never mention that a cheap tarp works better than most tents when the rain comes in sideways. Am I crazy for thinking most people way overspend on shelters, or did I just get lucky that night?
