I cut my stove fuel use in half by pre measuring portions with a kitchen scale, and I wish I had tried it sooner
For about 8 seasons I just eyeballed how much white gas to pour into my MSR WhisperLite, and I always overfilled it because I was scared of running out mid dinner. That meant carrying extra fuel I never burned and cleaning up spills in the vestibule more than once. Last spring before a 4 day trip in the Olympic National Park I weighed my fuel bottle on a cheap kitchen scale at home and measured out exactly 3 ounces per person per day based on boiling water for two meals plus coffee. The scale cost me $12 at a grocery store in Port Angeles and it changed how I pack. I came home with one unopened fuel bottle still in the truck, which never happened before. Weighing instead of guessing also made me realize I was boiling way more water than I needed for rehydrating meals. Now I want to know if anyone else has a packing trick like this, or am I late to the scale party?
My buddy did the same thing but with his alcohol stove and a little digital scale from Walmart that cost like 10 bucks, and he figured out he was carrying almost a full pound of fuel he never touched on weekend trips. The funny part is he also learned he was boiling like twice the water his meals needed, so he started cutting that back too and shaved even more weight. He said the scale paid for itself in one season just from not buying fuel he didnt burn. Weighing your bottle before and after a trip is a genius way to see what you actually use, I do that at home now just to track it. You got me wanting to dig out my kitchen scale before my next trip.
