I finally switched from a cheap foam pad to a proper insulated air mattress for my 3-season trips, and the difference in warmth after a cold night in the Adirondacks was like going from a park bench to my own bed.

Has anyone else made a sleep system upgrade that completely changed their comfort level, and what did you switch to?

My old bag was so bad I'd wake up wearing every layer I brought.

That shift from a cheap pad to real insulation is a total game changer, isn't it? It’s wild how we put up with being cold for so long just to save a few bucks. Jason’s comment about wearing every layer hits home, because that’s exactly what I did before I got a quilt. Switched from a mummy bag that felt like a straitjacket to a wide backpacking quilt, and suddenly I could actually move and stay warm. Makes you wonder why you ever settled for less.
