My brother said my tent setup was a 'wind catcher' after a trip to Lake Tahoe

We camped there last fall and he pointed out I always put my tent in a low spot between two trees, thinking it was sheltered. He said that spot was actually a wind tunnel, which explained the flapping all night. I moved my tent about fifty feet to the side, behind a solid rock outcrop, and the difference was huge. How do you pick a spot when the ground looks flat and open?

Yeah, I used to pick the lowest spot too, thinking it was more protected. Now I look for a natural wall, even a small hill or dense bushes, because the wind just pours through those dips. It's a simple change that makes a huge difference.

Hah, your brother nailed it! I learned the hard way too, camped in a dry creek bed that looked perfect. Woke up to a gale force wind funneling right through. Now I always look for a solid windbreak like your rock.

The fun part is when wind wraps around the top of a ridge and swirls down anyway. Found that out sleeping on what I thought was the sheltered side of a hill. Rocks are good but sometimes you need a thick wall of trees to really knock the force down.
