My buddy checked my pack weight at a trailhead in Bend and said I was carrying 12 pounds of stuff I'd never touched
He made me dump everything out and I had two extra fuel canisters, a hatchet I never used, and a full first aid kit I'd never opened in 3 years. Now I lay everything out the night before a trip and question each item, but what's the one thing you refuse to leave behind even if it never gets used?

Carrying stuff we never use is like the junk drawer in every kitchen, we all hang onto things just in case. For me it's my rain jacket, even in a drought I'm not leaving it home. The one time I do is the one time it pours.
