My buddy swore by a $20 foam pad for years, and I finally tried it

He always said a cheap closed-cell foam pad was better than an inflatable one for most trips. I used my fancy air pad for a long time, but it got a slow leak on a cold night in the White Mountains. I borrowed his old blue foam pad for the rest of the trip and slept way warmer. Has anyone else switched back to a simple pad after a gear failure?

Read a gear blog that called foam pads the ultimate backup plan. They never pop and you can just strap them outside your pack. Makes sense after hearing your story about that cold leak.

Buddy of mine @alex_king33 left his pad at home once and used a dry bag full of leaves as a makeshift one. Woke up sore and finding bugs in his jacket for days after.

Forget gear failure, I use mine as a quick seat on wet logs or a clean spot to sort gear. That blue pad is basically my outdoor doormat now.
