Serious question, I finally understood my tent footprint after a rainy night in Olympic National Park.
I always just laid my footprint flat under the tent, thinking it was just a ground cloth. Last weekend, a ranger saw my setup and pointed out I was letting water pool between it and the tent floor. He showed me to tuck the edges completely underneath, so no plastic is visible. Has anyone else had a gear use tip that seems obvious once you know it?

Took me years to figure out you should also fold the footprint so it's slightly smaller than the tent base.

Remembered my first time using a sleeping bag liner wrong. I just shoved it in like a pillowcase, woke up tangled like a mummy. Friend had to show me you actually climb into the liner first, then get in the bag. Felt like a total noob for a solid week after that one.
