That old timer at Big Bend who taught me about tent stakes

I was struggling to get my cheap aluminum stakes into rocky ground near the Santa Elena Canyon when this guy in his 70s walked over and handed me a set of titanium shepherd hooks, said 'nail those in at a 45 degree angle, not straight down.' Has anyone else had a random stranger on a trail save your trip with one simple trick?

Did you try stomping on a rock first to loosen the ground?

Switched to a wider spade after that and it made a world of difference.
