The campground host's warning about bear spray changed my whole routine

Last fall at a site near Bend, Oregon, this older host named Frank saw me unpacking my gear and just said, 'you keep that canister strapped to your hip, not buried in the pack.' I laughed it off until he showed me a shredded tent someone had left behind from a week prior. He explained that bears check out easy smells and the 20 seconds it takes to unclip a pack is too slow at 30 feet. Now I clip my spray to my belt loop before I even grab my water bottle. Has anyone else gotten a piece of advice from a random host that made you change your habits for good?
