Unpopular opinion: a guy at REI in Boise talked me out of the ultralight sleeping pad and I'm glad he did
I went in ready to drop $220 on a 12 ounce inflatable pad because every review I read said lighter is always better. The guy working there asked where I camp and I said mostly the Sawtooths in June, and he just laughed and handed me a 1 pound 4 ounce closed foam pad for $45. He said the inflatables pop on cold ground and a repair kit at 9pm in 35 degrees is a bad time. I've slept on it four nights now and honestly it's fine, my back doesn't care about the extra 8 ounces and I don't worry about a pinhole ruining the trip. Am I crazy for thinking the review sites push weight way harder than they should?
