Update: my $12 garage sale lantern outlasted my fancy one for 6 nights in Leadville
I picked up a beat up Coleman lantern at a garage sale in Leadville for $12 three summers back, mostly as a backup. Two weeks ago I finally ran it head to head against my $70 LED one on a 6 night trip near Twin Lakes, and the old one gave me steady light every single night while the new one died by night 4 on fresh batteries. I opened both up at the picnic table and saw the problem right away, the cheap one has a fat brass tank that holds way more fuel than those skinny battery packs. Now I'm wondering if I've been overpaying for camp lights this whole time, has anyone else had a cheap old lantern beat their new gear?
