Used to pack my headlamp batteries separate, now I tape them to the outside of the bag
For about four trips I kept my spare AAAs loose in a stuff sack and dug around for them in the dark at least twice a night. Last trip to Dolly Sods I taped two to the outside of my pack with painter's tape and found them in five seconds flat. Does anyone else have a dumb little trick they picked up way too late?
Two nights in Dolly Sods and you were out there playing the world's worst game of find the batteries while your hands went numb. I did the same thing for years, except mine lived in the brain of my pack, which is basically a black hole with straps. Now I wrap a couple spares in a strip of duct tape and stick them right on my headlamp band, so the light and the backup are one unit and I never have to dig. The real joke is that after all that fumbling I still run my headlamp down to nothing before I remember to swap them. Painter's tape on the outside of the pack is a solid call though, way easier to spot in the dark than anything buried in a pocket. The bigger question is what other simple fix are we both still ignoring because it feels too dumb to try.
