Buddy pitched me on a startup selling socks to dogs, and now I owe him $400
So about 8 months ago my buddy Dev in Guelph calls me up all excited about this company he's building. Dog socks. Little rubber grip socks for senior dogs so they don't slip on hardwood. I laughed for a solid 5 minutes, told him the market was dogs who don't have thumbs and owners too cheap to just buy a rug. He asked me for $400 to cover his first batch of samples and I gave it to him mostly to shut him up and partly because he's my friend. Fast forward to now, he's got 200 repeat customers on Etsy and a vet clinic in Kitchener that hands out his card to every older dog owner. I went to his place two weeks ago and watched him pack 30 orders in one evening while his beagle just lay there in the socks looking smug. So my $400 is now a 5% stake and he keeps calling me his "seed investor" at parties. Has anyone else here backed a friend's weird idea just to be nice, and how did it actually turn out for you?
