Pitched 12 investors at a demo day in Kitchener and learned the deck matters way less than the demo
I run a small software startup out of Waterloo and did a demo day in Kitchener last month where I had 3 minutes on stage. I worked on my slide deck for two weeks straight, but the founders who actually got follow up meetings were the ones who just opened their product and let people click around. My co-founder said afterward, "nobody remembers slide 7, they remember if the thing worked." We ended up getting 4 meeting requests out of 12 conversations, which was way more than the polished deck people. Has anyone else found that live demos beat perfect slides at these events?
Read a piece on TechCrunch last year that said investors spend most of a pitch watching the product, not the slides. Four meetings from 12 talks is a solid hit rate.
