Disagree: chasing a promotion at 26 was a bad move and my Monday review at the Tacoma office proved it
Everyone says say yes to the stretch role early. I did that and it blew up. Six months ago my manager pulled me into a Monday review at our Tacoma office and offered me a lead spot on a rollout with two new hires under me. I took it because that is what you are supposed to do, and within three weeks I was working 55 hours, skipping my sister's birthday, and my own project slipped by nine days. So I went back and asked to step down to my old role. My manager frowned but said okay, and honestly the next quarter was my best one. I shipped more work in 40 hours than I did in those 55. Not saying my case is everyone's case, your mileage may vary, but I am tired of the idea that turning down a title is always a mistake. Has anyone else stepped back down and had it work out fine?
