Dropped $1,200 on a resume writer and got back the same bullet points I already had
I want to warn anybody thinking about paying someone to fix their resume. Back in March I paid a resume service $1,200 because I kept getting passed over for roles in Denver. They had good reviews and a slick site. Six days later they sent back a Word doc where maybe three lines were different from what I sent them. They just shuffled my old bullets around and added a summary I could have typed in ten minutes. I asked for a rewrite and the person emailed back saying my experience was 'already well framed' so there was nothing to improve. That is $1,200 for a coat of paint. Talk to two or three people already working in the job you want instead. They will tell you what actually reads well for way less, sometimes free. Has anyone here paid for a career service and felt like they got something real out of it? I want to know if I just picked a bad one.
Three lines changed out of your whole resume and they called your experience “already well framed”? That's not feedback, that's them admitting they did nothing and still kept your money. If a place can't point to what they actually fixed, they had no business charging four figures for a Word doc.
