Had a weird career realization at the DMV last Tuesday
I've been stuck in the same admin role for like 5 years. Not bad, just boring. Last Tuesday I was waiting at the DMV on Empire Street, number 47, and this older guy next to me was telling the clerk about his old job as a printer. Not a printer like a machine, he ran a print shop back in the 90s. He said the part he missed most wasn't the actual printing, it was solving problems for people who had no idea what they needed. Like a bride needing 300 invitations in 2 days or a lawyer who forgot business cards before a big trial.
That hit me weird. Because my job has me doing the same thing, sort of. People come to me with a mess and I figure out the steps. I never thought of it as a skill, I thought of it as just "the work." Now I'm wondering if I should actually look for a role that's more about that, maybe like a project coordinator or something. Has anyone else found their real skill was hiding inside a boring job title?
