Heard a coworker say you need a 4-year degree to get ahead in IT...

I've been working in IT for 11 years without a degree and I make more than my manager who has a Master's - who's really getting ahead here?

The degree helps you get past HR filters though. That piece of paper opens doors that experience alone can't knock down.

Hmm I'm actually not sure that's totally true anymore. A lot of places are testing skills-based hiring now (which I think is a good thing) and dropping those degree requirements.
