I think the push for 'always be networking' is making people worse at their jobs

I saw my friend's work quality drop over six months after he started going to three networking events a week in Chicago. He was so focused on collecting business cards that his actual project reports got sloppy and missed key details. Has anyone else seen a coworker's skills slip because they were told to network nonstop?

But is that really the main cause?

Honestly, that sounds like a time management problem more than a networking issue. Couldn't he just do both things well?
