Just paid $300 for a resume writing service that made my experience sound worse
I saw an ad for a 'professional resume overhaul' and figured it was worth the money to get my job search moving. The person I worked with had a lot of fancy words on their site, but the resume they sent back was full of mistakes. They changed my old job title from 'Project Lead' to 'Project Helper' and used weird phrases nobody in my field would say. It took me a full week to notice how bad it was, and I had already sent it out to a few places. I feel like I wasted that cash and also lost time with those applications. Has anyone found a good, honest way to get a resume checked without getting ripped off?

Ugh that's so frustrating. What I did was ask a friend who actually hires people in my field to look at mine. They pointed out stuff I never would have thought of.

Disagree with @reese_lane29 on that one. Most friends aren't hiring managers and give bad advice. Just use a simple template and fix it yourself.

Oh man, that's the worst feeling. I got burned by one of those services years ago, same deal with the weird job title changes and clunky language. It's like they just run your stuff through a bad thesaurus and call it a day. I ended up going back to my old resume and just cleaning it up myself, which felt like throwing money straight in the trash. Total scam for something you can honestly do better with a free template and some time.
